Recently, DeltaTrak's Chief SaaS Officer, Karl McDermott weighed in on how the new U.S. administration policies could impact the produce industry.
One topic discussed was the potential placing of tariffs on some of the US trading partners. McDermott focused on what such tariffs might mean for food coming in from the neighboring countries of Mexico and Canada, which together account for over half of the food import value coming into the United States. He also touched on issues such as possible tariffs for China and potential changes to the seasonal agricultural workers program.
The new administration’s pledge to become less regulatory could result in more mergers and acquisitions--particularly on the retail side. Potential outcomes such as how such mergers could affect consumer prices as well as their impact on small-to-medium size growers and shippers were also examined. Will the merger between Kroger and Albertsons be approved?
